Crates honored for community service by Ohio State Bar Foundation
Columbus, OH (October 6, 2016)— Clayton Crates received the Ohio State Bar Foundation’s District 3 Community Service Award for Attorneys 40 & Under on September 13, 2016.
Living his mother’s advice to “bloom wherever you’ve planted,” Crates currently serves on the Board of the YMCA and the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, is a guardian ad litem with Court Appointed Special Advocates and volunteers with a local legal clinic as well as Junior Achievement. In addition, he also presents the “We the Jury” Mock Trial program in local schools.
Crates is a graduate of the 2014 Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA) Leadership Academy and is a member of both the Ohio Association for Justice and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
As a coach for youth soccer for kids who have never played before, he tells his team, “Success is learning to believe in yourself.” He carries this advice into his law practice and his community and professional engagements.
A partner with Arthur, O’Neil, Mertz, Michel & Brown Co. LPA, Crates practices criminal defense and domestic relations law. When not in the office, he dedicates much of his time to his community.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio in 2005 and his Juris Doctor from The University of Toledo College of Law in 2008.
About the Award
The Community Service Award for Attorneys 40 and Under is presented to attorneys, 40 years of age or younger, who contribute substantial time and effort in service to a local social service or to a local civil, artistic or cultural organization. The service must be outside the recipients’ practice of law and given without compensation. Emphasis is placed on current service. Recipients represent the ideals of the legal profession and, by example, are a credit to the profession.
