Jemison receives Ohio State Bar Foundation's Ramey Award for Distinguished Community Service
Columbus, OH (November 19, 2015)-- At the Ohio State Bar Foundation’s November 13th Annual Awards Dinner, Steven W. Jemison received the Ramey Award for Distinguished Community Service, an honor given to someone who has given freely and generously of his or her time outside the practice of law.
Jemison retired in 2010 as Proctor & Gamble’s Chief Legal Officer and Secretary, but part of his 29 years with P&G was also spent heading up legal affairs in Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Last year, however, he became CEO of the Law and Leadership Institute, declining any compensation, as the Institute took time to search for a new director. As a board member, he had the institutional knowledge to ensure a smooth transition so that LLI could continue to recruit students from inner city schools and to teach them the writing skills, the study skills, and the relationship skills, via a law themed-based approach, so their opportunities for further schooling and job possibilities could be enhanced.
Even though Jemison’s home office for many years was in Switzerland, he flew back regularly to serve on the boards of Cincinnati’s Free Store Food Bank, Dress for Success, Visiting Nurses Association, SWEL program, and as P&G’s United Way Campaign director. He also contributed much of his free time to the National Council for the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law to advise its program on leadership and to mentor individual students. He is still active with the National Council and keeps an eye on the fundraising he did for many OSU scholarships and a fully endowed law professorship. He currently also serves on Cincinnati’s Parks Foundation Board.
Jemison was taught by his community and his parents to make a difference and to make sure the difference actually gets done, an apt description for the Ramey Award itself.
Jemison has been a member of the Ohio and Cincinnati Bar Associations and has previous business affiliations with the Federal Communications Commission and National Labor Relations Board.
